Margaret Catherine (Pernaski) Porkka

She was born on February 28, 1932, in Hurontown, to the late Joseph and Lucille (Downey) Pernaski.

Margaret grew up in the Houghton area, often sharing fond memories of her time there. Later she went on to attend Northern Michigan College earning a bachelor’s degree in education in 1960.

On June 18, 1960, she was united in marriage to Alfred Porkka.

Margaret worked as a teacher for several years pausing to raise children in Highland. She went back to school and received her master’s in social work from Wayne State University before opening her own counseling practice.

After retirement, she and her husband spent 18 years in Arizona then moved to Washington in 2016 to be near their children.

Preceding her in death were her husband, parents, sister, Mary and daughter, Kathy.

She is survived by her brother, Joseph Pernaski; daughter, Sarah Porkka; son, Joe (Carol) Porkka; four grandchildren, Allison Button, Chelsea Button, Eli Porkka and Owen Porkka; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
