Paul C. Hughes, 72, a resident of Chassell, passed away Friday, January 27, 2023, at his home from an apparent heart attack.

He was born an army brat on June 25, 1950, in Sendai-Hanshu, Japan. Paul was raised in Germany before moving as a child with his family to make their home in Calumet. He was a graduate of the Calumet High School with the class of 1968.

Mr. Hughes was drafted into the US Army before attending Michigan Technological University.

Paul had worked at the White Pine Copper Mine for a short time. He then began a career delivering Propane Gas for 35 years retiring in 2017.

On August 29, 1981, he was united in marriage to the former Jody Debenack. The couple resided in Calumet and Houghton before moving to make their home in Chassell.

Paul was a proud Yooper and loved living and learning about the area. He enjoyed reading, listing to music, entertaining friends on the deck and feeding the birds. He loved all animals, especially his pup Hazel and cat Bob. Paul was always willing to help anyone at the drop of hat and his sense of humor will always be missed.

Preceding him in death were his parents, brothers David and Mark, his sister Kathy Westcott and his best friend Bill Dwyer.

Surviving are: His wife, Jody Hughes of Chassell. His sister, Sharon Murry of Vancouver, British Columbia. His sister-in-law, Linda Johnson of Larium. Several nieces, nephews and cousins. His puppy Hazel and cat Bob will be lost without Paul.

A memorial service for Paul will be held 1 pm Friday, February 3, 2023, at the Memorial Chapel Funeral & Cremation Service – Chassell Chapel with Rev. Bucky Beach to officiate. Military honors will be conducted by the Copper Country Veterans Association.
