John E. Manninen

John E. Manninen, 76, a resident of Tapiola Rd., Chassell, passed away Wednesday, February 15, 2023, at the DJ Jacobetti Home for Veterans in Marquette where he had been a resident patient.

He was born on April 17, 1946, in Hancock, MI, a son of the late Edward and Cecelia (Houle) Manninen. John was raised in Tapiola and was a graduate of the J.A. Doelle High School. He then attended Soumi College where he received a business degree.

Mr. Manninen worked as a tax preparer for H&R Block before being drafted into the United States Army serving in Vietnam during the War.

John returned to the Copper Country and was united in marriage to Karen Kirchoff. After a few years, the couple parted but remained friends throughout the years.

Mr. Manninen had worked a variety of jobs over the years such as a carpenter, a butcher, a tax preparer and helping others with odd jobs until his retirement. John enjoyed time in the outdoors hunting, fishing, and working in his garden. He was a gifted bread baker and always was willing to share a loaf with friends and family.

Preceding him in death were his parents, his brother Joesph Manninen, his sisters-in-law, Anna Manninen & Rose Manninen and his brother-in-law, Walter Luukuonen.

Surviving are; His children, John (Jennifer) Manninen of Gwinn, Jeremie Manninen of Gwinn, Cindy Manninen of Sulphur, Louisiana. His unadopted children, Tina (Jason) Juntunen of Trimountain, Laura Wiinikka of South Range. 4 Grandchildren (natural & unadopted) along with 1 great-grandson. A special friend, Karin Piipponen of South Range.

His siblings: Rose Luukkuonen of Trimountain, Wayne Manninen of Tapiola, Rita Petersen of Chassell, Ray Manninen of Baraga, James Manninen of Tapiola, Donald (Tammy Wallar) Manninen of Trimountain, Helen (Tom) Barney of Inman, SC. Numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

A memorial service for John will be held later this June at the Memorial Chapel Funeral & Cremation Service – Mt. View Chapel of South Range. Burial will be in the Mt. View Cemetery of South Range.
