David James Grahek

Breckenridge, MI — David James Grahek, age 83, of Breckenridge, went to be with his Lord on Monday, September 4, 2023, at Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids.

Dave was born August 15, 1940, in Laurium, MI, the son of Jacob and Florence Virginia (Wright) Grahek. He was raised in the UP and later moved to Flint where he attended St. John Vianney Catholic High School. After high school, Dave attended U of M Flint and earned his BA in Education. He later earned his master’s degree at CMU.

His love of music and opera led to meeting the love of his life, Linda, while attending her senior college recital at Alma College. This was fortuitous event as Linda was destined to work at Breckenridge High School as their music educator. Dave married Linda Robison on June 15, 1968, a union of 55 years. He taught at Breckenridge High School for 37.5 years teaching French, English Literature, World History, and Senior Humanities. While at Breckenridge, he was the Quiz Bowl coach and co-advisor for the Drama Club. Dave served as the Village of Breckenridge’s President for 16 years and worked with the Gratiot County Planning Commission. Dave was a member of Merrill Sacred Heart Catholic Church and sang in the choir, he served in the Knights of Columbus, and the Breckenridge and Alma/St. Louis Rotary and Trout Unlimited.

He is survived by his wife Linda, daughters Meg (Jesse) Zamora, Jennifer (Bryan Kersey) Grahek and granddaughter Chloe Sheler.

Dave was preceded in death by his parents, Jacob and Virginia.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, September 8, 2023, at 11 a.m. at Merrill Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Interment will follow in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be held at Lux and Whiting Funeral Chapel, Thursday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. with a K of C Rosary starting at 7:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital or Merrill Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
