Harold Makinen

ANN ARBOR — Harold J. Makinen, 76, passed away on January 19, 2024 in Ann Arbor after a lengthy illness.

He was born in Laurium on May 6, 1947 to Karl and Alice (Cassette) Makinen. A graduate of Lake Linden Hubbell High School, he completed his undergraduate degree in mathematics education at the University of Michigan, followed by post-graduate work in education administration at Eastern Michigan University. His education career was primarily spent in public schools in the suburban Detroit area. He was an avid University of Michigan sports fan and finally got to see their football team win a national championship shortly before his passing.

Harold was a loving and supportive father and grandfather and is survived by his children, Matthew (Courtney) Makinen, Tein Makinen, Raji Makinen, Dan (Bonnie) Makinen, and Emma Maragret (Michael) Seegers; his step-daughters Liisa Luck and Deidre Santella; his grandchildren, Bruno, Kent, Daniel, and Olivia; his siblings, James (Barbara) Makinen, Michael (Jean) Makinen, and Ann Kemppainen, as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother-in-law, Paul Kemppainen. Funeral services were private.
