Robert Bernard Fiandt

HANCOCK — Robert Bernard Fiandt, resident of Hancock, died on Wednesday, April 3, 2024. He was 56 years old. He was a beloved member of his church and their dedicated librarian for years. He is deeply missed.

Bob is survived by his sisters, Jackie Allen and Linda Retz and many friends from the Heart of the Keweenaw Sangha (Buddhist) and Keweenaw Unitarian Universalist Fellowship.

Bob Fiandt was born in 1968 in Atlanta, MI. His family moved to Hillman, MI in 1972. Bob had a close relationship with his father. He was elected to many leadership positions in his high school extracurriculars, and was even given extra credit for teaching precalculus to his fellow students. In 1986, Fiandt graduated valedictorian of his High School class at Hillman Community School.

Bob entered Michigan Tech in 1986, and in 1988 he was initiated into the Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity. He valued the close friendship with his fraternity brothers and regularly attended reunions until Covid made that difficult in 2020. He studied Physics, Mathematics and Social Sciences, and graduated from Michigan Tech with honors in the Social Sciences in February 1997. He was employed by the Alpena Public Schools as a Substitute Teacher.

Bob’s love of animals shone through his dedication to Cassie, the cat he adopted from the Copper Country Humane Society. He had a close relationship with his sister Jackie, and enjoyed reading books about religion and philosophy.

A memorial service to honor his life will be held on Saturday April 27 at 10 a.m. at the BHK Child Development Center (enter from Waterworks Drive) 700 Park Ave., Houghton, MI 49931. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Bob’s honor to either the Copper Country Humane Society or the Keweenaw Unitarian Universalist Fellowship.
