Scott Hiltunen
LOS ANGELES, CA — Scott Eric Hiltunen, 65, of Los Angeles, CA, passed away unexpectedly at his home on March 24, 2024. He was born on March 11, 1959 in L’Anse, Michigan, son of Edward and Donna (Tepsa) Hiltunen. Scott was raised in Nisula, attended Laird Township school in Alston and graduated from L’Anse High School in 1977. He attended the University of Michigan where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science and economics in 1981. Scott then moved to Los Angeles and began his career in pension and retirement plans working for Western Pension Services in Santa Monica, CA, where he met his future wife, Dana Jensen, a native Californian.
Scott and Dana married in 1993 and had their daughter Rachel Hiltunen in 1997. Although they were no longer married when Scott passed away, they were still good friends, celebrated holidays together and were loving co-parents to their daughter. Scott went on to meet Eric Phoombour in 2008. They were a match made for each other and enjoyed sixteen years together.
Scott was awarded a Juris Doctor degree by the University of Southern California Gould School of Law in Los Angeles in 1993 and joined Alex M. Brucker, a Law Corporation in Los Angeles. In 1998, the firm’s name was changed to Brucker Morra & Hiltunen. Scott was an active member of ASPA (American Society of Pension Actuaries). Eventually he became an independent attorney working on estate planning, divorce, child custody and trust dispute cases and had recently retired.
Scott was known as a witty, fun and loyal man. People were always looking to him for advice and answers. He was full of wisdom and had a good sense of humor. Scott was very generous to all his friends and family. He loved to cook and entertain and had good taste in decorating. Scott loved to travel and explored many countries in Europe, including Finland where he visited relatives, and to Asia where he visited Eric’s family in Thailand. Scott and Eric enjoyed vacationing in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, and spending time in Ontonagon, MI with many good friends who became like family.
Scott is survived by his partner Eric Phoombour of Los Angeles, CA, daughter Rachel Hiltunen of Los Angeles, CA, mother Donna Hiltunen of Hancock, MI, brother Tim Hiltunen (Lana Krhin) of Los Angeles, CA, sister Louise Hiltunen of Houghton, MI, uncle John Tepsa (Kathy) of Oshkosh, WI, aunt Sandra Haka of Sebring, FL, nephews, nieces, a grandnephew and grandniece, cousins, former wife Dana Jensen (Gish) of Panorama City, CA and many friends.
Scott was preceded in death by his grandparents Arthur and Ida (Hiltunen) Hiltunen and Ahti and Ina (Marttila) Tepsa, father Edward Hiltunen, brother Chris Hiltunen, uncles, aunts, cousins and several close friends.
Inurnment will take place in the Nisula cemetery.
