Danny Paul Antilla

NEWBERRY — Danny Paul Antilla, 56, of Newberry, passed away Tuesday afternoon May 21, 2024 at Helen Newberry Joy Hospital after three year illness with ALS.

Born December 10, 1967 in Laurium, son of the late Clayton and Margaret (Murphy) Antilla, Danny was a 1986 graduate of Calumet High School and a 1992 graduate of Northern Michigan University in Marquette earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Health and Physical Education. After college, he worked for Houghton High School as an English as a Second Language teacher as well as a girls’ basketball, track and football coach.

On April 21, 2005, Danny married the former Cheryl Paulson in Las Vegas, Nevada. A resident of Newberry since 1995, he finished his career with the Michigan Department of Corrections, working as a Program Coordinator for 25 years until his retirement in 2022.

Danny enjoyed bowling in his younger years and was an avid golfer and fisherman. He loved fishing for Splake with longtime friend, then brother-in-law, Marko. He spent much of his free time fishing for Walleye on Big Manistique Lake, once bringing home a huge 26.5″ 6.5lb walleye. He was an avid sports fan and loved rooting for his Detroit Tigers, New York Yankees, Detroit Red Wings and Green Bay Packers.

In addition to his parents, Danny is preceded in death by his sister Cindy Milhelich.

Survivors include his loving wife, Cheryl, of Newberry; children Jeremy (Ashley) Hattula of Calumet, Mandy (Bob) Kumpula and Greg Hattula all of Green Bay, Wisconsin; grandchildren Haylie, Quinn, James, Charlotte, Brynn and Braylon; siblings Robert Antilla and Clayton Antilla both of Calumet, Tina (Al) Grabig of Suamico, Wisconsin and Karen (Steve) Brown of Surprise, Arizona; brothers-in-law Mark (Julie) Paulson of Calumet, Bruce (Connie) Paulson of Calumet and Michael Milhelich of Fond du Lac, Wisconsin; many loving nieces and nephews.

Per his request, cremation services were accorded. A celebration of life will be announced and held at a later date.

Memorials may be directed to ALS Foundation, University of Michigan Pranger ALS Clinic or the Gleason Team Foundation for ALS in Dan’s loving memory.
