Marshall F. Keltz

Nov. 1, 1939 - June 17, 2024

NILES, IL -- Marshall F. Keltz, 84, of Niles, IL passed away peacefully with his children by his side on June 17, 2024 after a brief battle with cancer. Born in Detroit, MI on Nov. 1, 1939 to Archie and Anne (Weiner) Keltz, he was a 1957 Mumford High School, 1961 University of Michigan, 1964 Wayne State University Law School, and 1988 Kendall College Culinary Arts graduate.

He married Joanne Hoffman (1961-93), residing in Oak Park, MI and moved to Houghton, MI in 1972. Marshall practiced law with UP Legal Services, and later opened a private practice on Shelden Avenue. In 1978, the family opened The Shirt Stop, a custom design t-shirt store. He served on the Houghton Portage Township School Board, and was advisor to MTU fraternities, among other community activities. An active member of Temple Jacob in Hancock, he served as president, conducted services, set up a religious school, prepared students for bar/bat mitzvahs, and welcomed jewish MTU students into their home during the holidays. In 1986, moved to Chicago to pursue a career in culinary arts. An avid reader, traveler, volunteer, social activist and patron of the arts.

Survived by his children, Ira (Lynn) Keltz of Laconia, NH, Amy (Jeffrey) Cardella of Niles, IL, grandchildren Jonathan Brody, Archie Keltz, Alison and Michael Cardella, former wife Joanne Hoffman Keltz Simon of Portage, MI, and nephews/nieces, including Cheryl Lamm of Park Ridge, IL. Preceded in death by sister Charlotte (Marvin) Rosenberg, and partners Norman Cutler and William Drewry.
