Ingeborg Viola (Aittama) Thomas

Ingeborg Viola (Aittama)Thomas, 92, passed away peacefully on August 22, 2024. She was affectionately known as “MA” to dozens of kids that knew her.

Inge was born on October 23, 1931, and sat at number 11 of 12 children born to Charles Aittama and Hilda (Erickson) Aittama of Bootjack/Lake Linden, Michigan. Ma met Ken “Pap” in Detroit, they both worked at Nabisco. They married on April 10,1954 in Detroit. A few years later they bought their first home under the GI Bill in Dearborn Heights, a suburb of Detroit where they had 3 boys; Timothy (1959), Brian (1960) and Jay (1963).

In 1973, the family moved to beautiful Traverse City with Nabisco. Ma secured a job at the State Hospital that lasted until the State closed the hospital in 1989.

We are called to serve one another with kindness, Ma was the epitome of that service to others. Ma said “do a good deed, even how small, once a day even and just find out how good it makes you feel. You’ll discover sometimes, the rewards are not always monetary!”

Survivors include sons Tim (Lori) of San Pedro, California, Brian (Roy) of Traverse City, Michigan, and Jay (Louise) of Wallace, Michigan; special daughter-in-law, Sharon (Ken) Foster of Suttons Bay, Michigan; grandchildren, Andrew (Jenelle), Rachel (Peter), Chelsea, Hayley, Ryan, and Erik (Lexie), and great grandchildren, Clyde, Archer, Irene, Fritz, Rose, and numerous nieces and nephews. Ma & Pap had a special friend, Jackie Putnam, who bowled with them and frequented church together on Saturday nights.

A special thank you on behalf of the family to the entire staff at Boardman Lake Glens and Hospice of Michigan for making Moms’ time comfortable, safe and happy.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 5, 2024, at 12 Noon, Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Traverse City, Michigan, with a luncheon to follow in the Fellowship Hall.
