Marjorie Mattila

Marjorie was born on July 31, 1928, to Agda and Arthur Aho in Hancock. She grew up in Boston Location and attended the country school through the sixth grade. She then attended school in Hancock and graduated salutatorian of the class of 1946.

Marjorie went to work for Michigan Bell as a telephone operator, first in Detroit and later in Milwaukee. She eventually transferred to the Houghton office. Even then, Marjorie was known for her cheerful, outgoing personality and ability to talk with anyone. She cultivated friendships that she enjoyed for decades.

Marjorie married Gordon Mattila from Toivola on Dec. 23, 1950. They lived in Houghton for less than a year before moving to South Range. Marjorie and Gordon had four children: Joel (deceased), Laurie, Wynne and Kris. They were also blessed with four grandsons: Grayson, Garrett, Dane and Owen.

Marjorie loved spending time with family and friends at their camp at Lake Superior. It was a place dear to her heart, where she loved to take long walks on the beach. Her life happily centered around her home, Gordon, children, grandsons and friends of all ages.

Marjorie also enjoyed being a Girl Scout leader and later a Cub Scout leader.

Marjorie was a member of the South Range Apostolic Lutheran Church for over 50 years. Her church community was an important part of her life.

Marjorie is survived by her three children, four grandsons and many loving friends.

Marjorie’s family is grateful for the kindness of the caregivers at Portage Pointe.

Private services with burial in the Toivola Cemetery will be held at a later date.

Marjorie’s family suggests that the memorial donations be given to the Range Apostolic Lutheran Church in South Range.
