William Yakovich

William “Bill” Paul Yakovich of Ontonagon peacefully passed away on May 18, 2025, at Our Lady of Mercy Care Facility in Hubbell.
Bill was born on Oct. 10, 1940 in Ontonagon, to Paul and Ardith (Dragoo) Yakovich of Rockland, Michigan. He attended school in Rockland and graduated in 1958.
He played basketball all through his high school career, and was one of the U.P. high scorers in 1958.
After high school, he joined the U.S. Army and was stationed for two years stateside. He attained sharpshooter status during his time in the army and was honorably discharged in August 1960 and went to work for the local paper mill immediately thereafter. He worked there until the early ’70’s and then went into carpentry, joining the Carpenter’s Union. He worked on various projects here in the U.P. and also down in Florida during the winter. He subsequently worked at various skilled labor jobs and as a CDL licensed bus driver until he retired in 2002.
He loved sports all through his adult life and played softball and basketball for many years on local teams.
Bill is survived by his wife, Carol Allen Yakovich; son, Brandon Yakovich; and daughter, Julie Cortright; grandsons, Matthew Strong (Madeline), Christian and Patrick Cortright; and one great granddaughter, Penelope Strong. He is also survived by brothers, Paul Yakovich (Renee Jacobson), Patrick Yakovich (Roxane); as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Ardith and Paul; his brothers, Robert “Bobby” and Bernard “Bernie” Yakovich.
Funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 30, 2025, at Holy Family Catholic Church with Father Michael Jacobus officiating. A rosary will be said prior to the funeral mass. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in Rockland.
Memorials can be sent to St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Rockland. The family wishes to extend our sincere thanks to the nurses and staff at Our Lady of Mercy for the care they gave him during his last two months.
