Louis Roy
June 3, 1947 - June 25, 2025

Louis Joseph Roy, age 78, of L’Anse, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, at Baraga County Memorial Hospital.
Louis was born on June 3, 1947, in L’Anse, the son of Louis P. and Marion (Martell) Roy. He graduated from L’Anse High School in 1966 and proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.
On June 8, 1968, he married the love of his life, Margaret Kemppainen, in L’Anse.
Louis began his career with the Upper Peninsula Power Company in Marquette and later transferred to L’Anse, where he continued to work until his retirement.
A devoted member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, Louis shared his love of music by singing in both the church and folk choirs. He was also a proud and active member of the Knights of Columbus for over 50 years, as well as a member of the VFW, U.P. Whitetails, and the Ottawa Sportsman’s Club, where he served as a shooting instructor. Additionally, he dedicated time to serving on the Community Action Board of Directors.
Louis found great joy in the outdoors and he loved his camp. He loved hunting, fishing, golfing, and playing cribbage, and was always happiest when spending time with family and friends.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Margaret Roy of L’Anse; daughters, Amy Roy of Zion, Illinois, and Jeanette (Sean) Wirtz of Belle Plaine, Minnesota; brother, Thomas (Cindy) Roy of L’Anse; sister, Susan (Michael) Chellew of Iron Mountain; sister-in-law, Jane Roy of Skanee; grandchildren, Tyler Wirtz and Taryn (Nils) Boyum; great-granddaughter, Greta Jane Boyum; as well as many cherished nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Marion; and his brother, Dennis Roy.
Visitation will take place on Monday, June 30, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Jacobson Funeral Home, with the Knights of Columbus leading the Rosary at 7 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, July 1, at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church with Fr. Ben Rivard officiating. A luncheon will follow in the church hall.
Committal prayers and military honors, provided by the Baraga County Area Veterans, will be held on Thursday, July 3, at 10 a.m. at the L’Anse Evergreen Cemetery.
