ATLANTIC MINE — Raymond “Ray” Karvonen, 93, of Atlantic Mine, passed away on Sept. 9, 2025, at HSHS St. Mary’s Hospital Medical Center in Green Bay, Wisconsin, after a short illness.
He was born on Aug. 4, 1932, in Onnela, a son of the late Isaac and Selma (Pennala) Karvonen. Ray was raised in Onnela and Atlantic Mine while attending the Atlantic Mine School.
Following school, Ray began a career as a flooring installer and became a skilled and dedicated floor layer.
On Sept. 23, 1950, he was united in marriage to the former Gloria Dulong. The couple had made their home in Atlantic Mine as they raised their family.
Ray enjoyed playing baseball, horseshoes and golf. He liked the outdoors, hunting and fishing. He was an avid fan of the Detroit Tigers and Lions.
Above all, Ray loved his family and friends.
Ray was known for his kindness, compassion and sense of humor. His presence touched everyone who knew him, and he will be dearly missed.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Gloria; sons, Keith and Ronald; granddaughter, Stephanie; daughter-in-law, Yoko; and son-in-law, Gene; along with his parents.
Ray is survived by his loving children, Gloria (Ernie) Luttinen of Wisconsin, Wayne Karvonen of Washington, Gary Karvonen of Houghton, Darlene (Kim) Van Wert of L’Anse, Diane Karvonen South Range, Cindy Hall of Atlantic Mine, and Donald Karvonen of Atlantic Mine; grandchildren, Jodi, Carri, Tracy, Lisa, Shawn, Jamie, Mary Jo and Emily; and numerous great and great-great grandchildren.
In keeping with Ray’s wishes, a graveside service for family and close friends will be held to honor his life and memory.
In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, the family suggests that memorial donations be given to Little Brothers Friends of the Elderly.
