Robert Wanhala

Aug. 29, 1959 - Nov. 17, 2025

SOUTH RANGE — Robert A. Wanhala a resident of South Range, passed away on Nov. 17, 2025, at the UP-Health System – Marquette Hospital.

Most knew him as Bobby or Buzzy. He came into the world 66 years ago on Aug. 29, 1959. Born to the late Sharon (Perfetti) Wanhala and the late Bob Mattson.  Later, Robert Wanhala came into Sharon’s life and adopted Bobby.

He attended the Chassell School.  Later on he worked in construction and the Ginseng Farm.

At a point in his life he met Tamara Makela and had three children with her.

Life went by and as of late Bobby reconnected with his girls. They formed a wonderful bond. He loved spending time with his girls, sisters and his friends.

As he became a grandpa, he loved to spend time strolling down the road with his grandson Grayson. Always sneaking that one last piece of candy in before mom could see.

Buzzy loved his oldies music, playing rummy and poker. If he wasn’t playing cards, he was watching his favorite ID channel.

Preceding him in death were his mother and adoptive father: Sharon and Robert Wanhala; his father, Bob Mattson; and his brother, Kerry Wanhala.

Surviving are his daughters, Amanda (Johna Marks) Makela of Ontonagon, Michelle (Justin Ruostala) Wanhala of Houghton, and Brittany Wanhala of Laurium; his grandchildren, Grayson Ruotsala and Chase Ruostala; his sisters, Leighann Wanhala and (Rick “Gus”) of Chassell and Sheri (Mike) Paulsen of Little Suamico, Wisconsin; his aunts, Dolly Pesola and Marlene Perfetti Junkin; his nieces and nephews, Ashley (Mollie), Waikko (Nicole), Timmy, and Alicia (Travis); and his special friend, Kevin Rimpela.

Just as your grandchildren’s lives began yours sadly ended. We Firmly believe that, He has bigger plans and will help us girls get through our days without you here.

We’re going to miss you dad.

A Celebration of his life and pot luck will be held Saturday Dec. 27, 2025, at the Range lounge from 12-3 p.m.
