Daniel Gary Wakeham, 81, passed away at home on Dec. 28, 2025, in Houghton. Born Oct. 23, 1944, to Jack and Mabel Wakeham, Dan grew up with a strong sense of family that guided him throughout his life. He graduated from Houghton High School in 1963 and on June 12, 1965, Dan married his high school sweetheart, Donna (Schutz).
Dan pursued higher education at Suomi College before earning his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Northern Michigan University.
His professional journey began as a high school teacher in Watersmeet, Michigan. Upon returning to Houghton, he served as a juvenile officer and later as a social worker at the Houghton County Medical Care Facility, where his compassion and dedication touched countless lives.
Dan and Donna shared 60 years of marriage, building a life rooted in love and family with Donna at the center of his world. A proud father to Dr. Tim Wakeham and Sherry Hughes (Patrick), Dan was also a loving grandfather to Cheyenne Hughes and Travis Hughes, who brought him immense joy and pride.
Dan was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Mabel Wakeham; sister, Vicki; sister-in-law, Rita Kyro; and parents-in-law, Donald Schutz and Dorothy Hepfer.
He is survived by his wife, Donna; sister, Debra Manderfield; brother, Gary Wakeham (Theresa); and many beloved nieces and nephews, including Wendy Schutz, Clint Kyro, Jeff Wakeham, Robin Wagner, and Michael Manderfield (Karen); as well as numerous dear aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Dan had a lifelong love of sports and was a devoted Green Bay Packers fan, even as his wife remained loyal to the Detroit Lions– a lighthearted bond that highlighted their loving partnership.
In accordance with Dan’s wishes there will be no funeral services. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
