Irene Mae Edgar

HANCOCK — Irene Mae Edgar, 81, the woman who loved everyone and was a lifelong resident of Hancock, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 5, 2026 at Canal View – Houghton County.

She was born in Hancock on November 16, 1944 to the late Lawrence, Sr. and Elmira Peltier. She belonged to the Hancock Eagles Club where she formed many friendships. Pasty making was one of the many joys she cherished. She loved to knit dish cloths which she gave to many people throughout the community. She also loved building puzzles, playing bingo, and spending time with her family.

Irene was preceded in death by her parents; sisters Theresa “Ann”, Leona “Jean”, Kathleen, Patricia,and Doris; and brothers Lawrence, Jr., Francis, George, and Hubert. She is survived by 2 daughters: Carol Peterson and Marsha (Jeff) Hill; a son, David (Heidi) Edgar; a brother, Robert (Marian) Peltier; a brother-in-law, James Barroga; 4 granddaughters: Rachel (Derek) Gherna, Courtney Edgar, Brittney (Frank Schutz) Deforge, and Christine (Tyler Paavo) Hill; 1 grandson: Jesse Deforge; 4 great-grandchildren: Gyneva, Luca, Parker, an Kallen; a special niece, Gina Hill; and numerous other nieces and nephews. She also leaves behind 3 very special longtime friends: Mary Lepisto, Gloria Wylie, and Janis Raffaelli.

Her family would like to extend their gratitude to all of the caregivers and staff at Canal View for their tender and loving care Irene received this past year. She truly loved it there.

Graveside services will be held at the family lot at Forest Hill Cemetery in the spring, with Pastor Brahm Semmler Smith to officiate.
