Rose Marie “Suzie” Mayo

BARAGA — Rose Marie “Suzie” Mayo, age 82 of Baraga, MI passed away unexpectedly on Friday, January 16, 2026, at Baraga County Memorial Hospital in L’Anse. Suzie was born in L’Anse on February 21, 1943, the daughter of the late Alfred W. and Laura L. (LaJoye) Johnson. She graduated from Baraga High School in 1961, and later attended St. Joseph Hospital School of Nursing in Hancock, where she earned her registered nursing certificate. Suzie was employed at Winkler’s Nursing Home, and also served as school nurse at Baraga Area Schools.

After seven years of courtship, on May 30, 1964, in Assinins, MI, she married her high school sweetheart James “Jim” Mayo. Suzie was a devoted member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Baraga. She enjoyed puzzles, bird watching, crocheting & knitting, gardening, trips to various casinos, Michigan State University sports, baking and dining out with family.

Above all, Suzie cherished spending time with family. She loved spending quiet time at their cottage on Huron Bay. Suzie is survived by her loving husband, Jim Mayo of Baraga, children Todd Mayo (Lisa Broemer) of Baraga, Julie (Tony) Angle of Baraga, Tom (Tina) Mayo of Gwinn, Kim (Jim) Tikkanen of Calumet, Mike (Angie) Mayo of Aura, and Bob (Mary) Mayo of Baraga, 20 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren with one on the way, brother Robert (Shirley) Johnson of L’Anse, and sister Mary (Mike) Johnson of L’Anse. Numerous nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Billy, sister Mary Ellen, and granddaughter Kelsey. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 12 p.m., on Friday, January 23, 2026, at St Ann’s Catholic Church, Baraga, with Father Ben Rivard, Celebrant. The family will receive friends at the church on Friday from 11 a.m. until the time of service. Immediately following service, the family invites friends to join them for fellowship and a luncheon in the church hall. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made, in Suzie’s honor, to St Ann’s Catholic Church of Baraga; envelopes will be available at the church.
