Douglas John Dernberger

HANCOCK — Douglas John Dernberger, 74, resident of Hancock, passed away peacefully on the evening of Tuesday, January 27, 2026, at UP Health – Marquette Hospital. Doug was born on September 17, 1951, and grew up in Farmington, Michigan. Throughout his life he was known for his quick wit and a sense of humor that could make anyone laugh.

Doug enjoyed a long career with Waste Management, where he worked for over 20 years and retired as a District Manager. He took great pride in his work and in the friendships he built along the way. Retirement gave him more time to enjoy the things he loved most–the outdoors, including hiking, camping, fishing, hunting, traveling the country, and spending winters in Arizona.

Above all, Doug’s greatest passion was his volunteer work with Little Brothers – Friends of the Elderly in Hancock, Michigan, where he dedicated his time and heart to bringing companionship and joy to others. He continued this work faithfully until his passing, leaving behind a legacy of kindness and service.

Doug is survived by his daughters, Kendahl (Tim) Lock and Samantha (Mauro) Dernberger; his sister, Lisa Searcy; his niece, Jordan (Phil) Tillison; his great-nephew Brayden and great-niece Layla; and his loving girlfriend, Amy Elisabeth Tolsdorf. He is also survived by his former wife and mother of his children, Patricia “Sunny” Granfeldt, with whom he remained a dear friend.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Marion Dernberger and his brother, Jeff Dernberger.

In keeping with Doug’s wishes, no services will be held. Those who knew him are encouraged to remember him in their own way–perhaps with a walk in the woods, ice fishing, a shared laugh or an act of kindness for someone in need.

Memorial donations in Doug’s honor may be made to Little Brothers – Friends of the Elderly (Upper Michigan) a cause that meant so much to him. https://www.lbfemichigan.org/
