CALUMET -- Paul Harold Jurmu Jr, a beloved husband, stepfather, brother, uncle, and friend, passed away peacefully at his home on August 26, 2026. Born on December 23, 1944, in Calumet, Michigan, Paul graced this world with his warmth and compassion for 81 years. He was the cherished son of the late Paul Harold Jurmu and Martha (Kemppainen) Jurmu. Paul’s life was marked by a deep connection to his roots and a profound love for those around him. He was predeceased by his beloved wife Joanie Jurmu, with whom he shared 33 wonderful years of marriage. Their love story began with a beautiful ceremony in Hawaii on July 23, 1990, and together, they enjoyed countless adventures, particularly treasuring their time in Arizona.
Paul was also preceded in death by his parents, and dear siblings, Ruth Orr, Donna Bergstrom, Becki Jurmu, Debbie Sarris, Timothy Jurmu, and Mark Jurmu.
He is survived by his devoted stepdaughter Nicole Ossanna (Tyler Saari), his brother John Jurmu, sisters Anne Morin and Marty O'Brien, and many loving nieces and nephews.
Paul’s family was the cornerstone of his life, and he cherished every moment spent with them. Paul’s journey of education began at Pelkie School, later relocating to Detroit before returning to the area where he pursued higher education. He attended Michigan Technological University, earning an Associate Engineering Technician degree. His professional life was marked by dedication and entrepreneurship. After working with Hocking Construction, Gundlach Construction, and serving on the Houghton County Road Commission Board, he founded his own company, JCS Inc., and dedicated the remainder of his time specializing in pavement marking.
A man of strong faith, Paul was an active member of the First Baptist Church, where he let his beliefs guide him in all his endeavors. Known for his Finnish “Sisu,” Paul was admired for his perseverance and warm-hearted smile that brightened the lives of those around him. Paul’s love for the outdoors was evident in his everyday life. Whether he was feeding the myriad of wildlife --deer, turkeys, squirrels, birds, foxes, and raccoons--or simply enjoying the beauty of a sunset, he found peace and joy in nature. His passion for travel and the mountains added richness to his life, but nothing compared to the happiness he found under a starlit sky in the backyard of his own home in Baraga.
A funeral service celebrating Paul’s life will be held at 12:00 p.m., Thursday, September 10, 2026 at Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, located at 18240 U.S. 41, L'Anse, MI 49946 with Pastor Jerry Bishop officiating. The family will greet friends at the funeral home on Thursday from 11 a.m. until the time of the funeral service. Immediately following the services, the family invites friends to join them for a luncheon and fellowship in the Harrington Gathering Room, located at the funeral home.

His legacy of love, faith, and kindness will forever remain in the hearts of all who knew him.
