HOUGHTON -- Victor Chartier, 96, a resident of Houghton, passed away Tuesday, September 15, 2026, at Garden View Memory Care in Calumet, Mi where he had resided since November. He was born on June 4, 1930, in Lake Linden, MI, a son of the late Adelore & Bertha (Pelland) Chartier. Victor was a graduate of the Lake Linden High School in 1948. He loved Shop class the best. Victor was an M.P. with the United States Marine Corp, stationed in San Francisco during the Korean War. On August 4, 1956, he was united in marriage to Nancy Chappell and they made their home in Houghton, MI. Victor always talked about the hard work he had done at the Baccus Dairy Farm in the Traprock area as his 1st job, driving a team of horses to plow the fields. Victor worked for the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers as a crane operator on projects all around Lake Superior. He also worked for Herman Gundlach Construction on the building of Wadsworth Hall at MTU. He then worked for the United States Post Offices in Houghton and Iron Mountain and became the Post Master of the Toivola Post Office until his retirement. Vic also worked for Meals on Wheels and various house painting and many odd jobs in the Houghton area. Vic was especially proud of the work he did at his lake property. He enjoyed going to various casinos with Nancy and seeing his friends and family.
Preceding him in death were his parents, his wife Nancy, his sister Rita Lampaa, his daughter Kay Ellen Chartier, brother-in-law Jim Chappell and niece Kim Ellegood. Surviving is: His daughter Karen (Keith) Anderson of Houghton; His grandchildren Stephanie Anderson of Houghton and Aaron Anderson of Minneapolis; his great-grandchildren: Morgan (Bronson) Wood, Kade (Tiia Wickstrom) Farrell, Brycyn & Paige Nettell. His brother-in-law, Clyde Chappell of White Lake, along with his nieces, Nicole Chappell, Jennifer Chappell, Lilly and great-nephew Conner and special friends Henry "Pukko" Clouthier and John "Jupe" Erickson. A very special thanks go out to all the staff at Garden View Memory Care who tried to help him adapt and make him happy.
Visitation will be at the Memorial Chapel Funeral & Cremation Service in Hancock, MI, Friday, September 18th at 11 a.m. with a service at 1 p.m. There will be a Military Service at the Forest Hill Cemetery shortly thereafter.
