Chip in to help feed a hungry neighbor Saturday

Letter carriers step up to help hungry neighbors Saturday

When you’re looking for something to do in Superiorland this weekend, perhaps some of us can add “Help out a hungry neighbor” to that list.

Marquette County letter carriers on Saturday will again participate in Stamp Out Hunger across America with the public’s help.

In the 30 years since it began, the Stamp Out Hunger effort is the nation’s largest single-day food drive, with letter carriers having collected more than 1.82 billion pounds of food from postal customers.

To help Stamp Out Hunger in Marquette County this year, leave a sturdy bag containing non-perishable foods, such as canned soup, canned vegetables, pasta, rice or cereal next to your mailbox prior to the time of regular mail delivery Saturday.

Food items should be in nonbreakable containers, such as boxes and cans.

Local letter carriers will then collect donations from homes across the county and deliver them to Marquette County food pantries including the Salvation Army, St. Vincent de Paul, Room at the Inn, Janzen House and the Women’s Center.

We are all busy this time of year, with spring cleaning and getting rid of some of those winter cobwebs. But please, take a few minutes to put a bag together and help your neighbors — those chores can wait, but hunger waits for nobody.

“Letter carriers are a part of every neighborhood in the nation,” National Association of Letter Carriers President Fredric Rolando said in a news release, “and we see the growing need for food assistance in our communities. On Saturday, NALC invites everyone to participate in the annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive. Together, we can help stamp out hunger in America.”

The timing is important, the news release added, with food banks, pantries and shelters running low on donations from the winter holidays and with summer approaching, when most school meal programs are suspended.
