Good advice: Don’t let summer season pass you by

Some may have lamented the recent mini heat wave in which temperatures soared close to triple digits and humidity was high.

But we offer this to those complaining: The summer solstice, the longest day and the shortest night of the year in the Northern Hemisphere, has already come and gone.

That means the days are getting shorter and the summer that just started will be flying by.

Which means if you haven’t already, it’s time to get out to enjoy the beautiful Upper Peninsula summer weather before it’s history.

There are events like farmers’ markets in many communities which provide a chance to get out to choose from nature’s bounty grown locally.

The Marquette and Negaunee city bands offer outdoor concerts through the summer, bringing beautiful music to the masses.

Celebrations of the Fourth of July and Negaunee’s Pioneer Days are fast approaching, including parades and fireworks to dazzle all ages.

There are simple, inexpensive summer pleasures, too, like taking a hike in the woods, bird watching and swimming in local small lakes or Mother Superior, if you’re brave.

Even just taking a stroll in your neighborhood is great this time of year, as long as the bugs are too vicious. Or grabbing an ice cream cone from a local vendor is especially sweet.

You get the drift: Carpe Diem this summer season. Enjoy it before it’s gone and we’re listening to wind-chill advisories instead of the heat index.
