Spring Cleanup successful

To the editor:

The truth of the adage “many hands make light work” was reaffirmed in my mind on Saturday, May 17, at Main Street Calumet’s annual Spring Cleanup. A group of 50+ volunteers gathered Saturday morning and spread across Agassiz Park, Memorial Park, and the streets and alleyways of downtown Calumet. They plucked, swept and raked the past 12 months of accumulated refuse (candy wrappers, leaves, cigarette butts, bottles, broken toys, stamp sand, etc.) out of town. The work, while dirty, was performed with smiles, perhaps at the thought of contributing to the betterment of our community and perhaps at the sun, which was shining warmly for what seemed like the first time this spring! After a few hours of work appetites were roused and a BBQ was enjoyed by all.

While my back was warmed by the sun, my heart was warmed by all the people who showed up, and took time out of their lives, to help clean up our community.

I want to thank the volunteers, of all ages, your energy and enthusiasm were wonderful! Special thanks to the Northwestern Great Lakes Chapter of Girl Scouts, Lighthouse Learners, National Honor Society, North Point Church of the Keweenaw, Keweenaw Baptist Church, and Christ Church. Thanks are due too, to the contributors of food and beverage for our event; Caf Rosetta and Pat’s IGA, Calumet.

With continued involvement from selfless individuals like those mentioned above, I have no doubt that this event can continue to grow and Calumet can look better each year. Volunteers, I thank you for showing up, and cleaning up!
