Proposal 1 forum on April 28

To the editor:

May 5 is the vote on the Proposal 1 ballot proposal, which would raise our state sales tax from 6 percent to 7 percent, primarily to fund road repairs but with many other impacts as well. As noted on the front page of the Daily Mining Gazette (Monday April 13), Representative Scott Dianda recently discussed the several pieces of Proposal 1 at the annual meeting of the League of Women Voters of the Copper Country on April 11.

The LWVCC is offering another opportunity on April 28 for voters to learn more about Proposal 1 with the presentation “May 5 State Ballot Proposal: What is it; What would it do?” by Sue Smith, the President of the Michigan League of Women Voters. This presentation, developed with non-partisan information provided by the House and Senate Fiscal Agency Analysis, will take place Tuesday April 28 at 7pm in the Houghton High School Auditorium. All are invited to attend; the presentation will be followed by a question and answer session. The slides for the presentation are available on the web at:

www.lwvccmi.org/Election-ballot.html.

We encourage all voters to take part in the balloting on May 5. This ballot concerns a significant change in how our state services are financed, and it is up to us.
