Chassell residents’ votes should count

To the editor:

As a Chassell resident, mother and teacher, I completely agree with the recent very well-written letter by Bryan Johnson. The Chassell Township Board members (except for June Michaelson-Haataja who voted no) are not representing the majority of Chassell residents who voted by a 54-46 percent margin to retain membership in the Portage Lake District Library.

Our voices should be heard and our votes should count. Is this a new precedent? If I don’t like the results of an election can I request that the issue be put back on the ballot? I was present at a board meeting where the Township Supervisor Dave Mattson stated that the Board is “neutral” on the library issue and wanted to let the voters decide. However it appears that now they won’t accept these results as valid?

I find this decision by the Chassell Township Board members to be frightening, discouraging and very disheartening.

I hope that other Chassell residents who support our membership in the PLDL let the board know how they feel. The board should represent all of the Chassell residents, not just those who they agree with.
