Officers risked safety to help

To the editor:

My husband and I were out for a walk on Friday night just as the fire became apparent in downtown Houghton. As we walked up to Sheldon Avenue at the corner, all we saw were several law enforcement officers running full-speed down the street towards the fire. I don’t know their names, there was at least one from Houghton and one from the Sheriffs Department. These officers didn’t even hesitate. They all ran directly into the building without any protection except their normal clothing. As we stopped and listened we could hear them all calling out inside the building to see if there was anyone responding. Occasionally they would come out coughing and then return inside until they determined that apparently there was no one inside. I don’t know at this time if the building was empty, but they did everything in their power to make sure, risking their safety to come to the aid of others.

In all honesty I had never seen any one in action like that. Those officers were amazing. Without a thought they risked their lives to help what could have been victims of a horrible disaster. Kudos to them and all our law enforcement officers and volunteer firemen in the Copper Country for risking everything to protect us.

This is what makes our area such a great place to call home.
