Franklin still seeking clerk candidates

FRANKLIN TOWNSHIP – The Nov. 8 general election is rapidly approaching, but on the Franklin Township ballot there is no one yet listed for clerk, and Glenn Ekdahl hopes that situation is remedied soon.

Ekdahl, who is Franklin Township supervisor, said no one filed for the clerk position to be on the Aug. 2 primary ballot, which was for candidates with party affiliations. No one filed by the July 21 deadline to be on the Nov. 8 ballot as an independent, or unaffiliated, candidate, either.

The deadline to file as a write-in candidate on the Nov. 8 ballot is Oct. 28, and Ekdahl said candidates with or without party affiliation can file then.

As of Friday, Ekdahl said one person expressed interest to him for the position, but that person hadn’t filed by then.

“We’re still out there seeking any candidates for township clerk,” he said.

So far, Ekdahl said the clerk position is the only one without a candidate. Trustee Mary Sears filed to run for supervisor on the partisan Aug. 2 ballot as a Republican, and she will be on the Nov. 8 ballot. Also on the Nov. 8 ballot for supervisor is Roger Sullivan of Paavola, who didn’t claim a party affiliation.

It’s Sears’ trustee position that will be available in November, and Larry Julio of Ripley filed to run for the seat unaffiliated with a party.

Also on the November ballot are Trustee Dan Dulong Jr., who is seeking re-election, and Jodi Mikesch is running for treasurer. Both are running without party affiliation.

All terms on the board of trustees are four years.

Ekdahl said if no one is sworn in as clerk by Jan. 1, the board of trustees has 45 days to appoint someone. Current Clerk Mary Brunet, who chose not to seek re-election, may stay on until a new clerk is found.

However, Ekdahl said there doesn’t seem to be much interest among township residents for the clerk position.

“It’s pretty quiet,” he said.

The township clerk takes care of the elections in the township, and deals with the various funds, so it’s an important position in the township government, Ekdahl said.

“It’s very vital,” he said.

Ekdahl said he will be finished as supervisor at noon on Nov. 20, which is also the date the other members of the board take their oaths.
