Some fishing, hunting thoughts

To the editor:

The game is on!

I’m just scribbling a few sentences on fishing, hunting and wildlife.

First off, most of us go hunting mainly for the sport and companionship of it. I know it helps the economy and relieves stress, too.

Fishing is for everyone supposedly. Companionship, exercise, bragging rights and taking your friends and kids outdoors is utopia.

I haven’t been doing much of it lately, myself, guilty as acknowledged.

Anyway, I still wonder if the DNR and those involved are doing enough to keep our rabbit, partridge, steelhead and other game population intact. That’s why I buy my licenses. You can add speckie fishing and deer hunting also.

There was nothing like finding a beaver dam, a new swamp, dear hideout, etc. The 33-inch, 13-pound steelhead we got in the 1970s is one of the highlights of my fish career.

So is the 8-point, 230-pound buck I got by my Misery Bay Camp in 1971. But visiting the Tilton Hilton (a camp next to mine) is also a highlight of each deer season.

Since I’ve gotten a 10-pointer and an eight-point buck in the last five years, I can’t gripe on deer population.

But birds, rabbits and steelhead (possibly), I have my doubts.

Anyway, I wish everyone luck that tries their skills on game! Respect them and you can still have fun.

Just your average hunter and fisherman (who is no writer).
