Before voting, know numbers

To the editor:

What do the numbers say?

Half of the $10,712,400 H-PT millage proposal is for ball fields and athletic related items at the high/middle school.

Altogether, $5,601,200 will be spent on football field artificial turf, track, bleachers, press box, concession building, lighting and scoreboard; and new baseball and softball fields with new fencing, lighting and scoreboard.

About $5.1 million will be spent on roofing, parking lot paving, lockers, restroom renovations, classroom furniture and electrical systems upgrades at the high/middle school; and paving, carpeting, HVAC, and electrical systems upgrades at the elementary school.

If your home’s market value is $100,000 you will pay $37.50 per year for 25 years; a market value of $200,000 will pay two times as much: $75 per year; a market value of $300,000 three times: $112.50 per year; etc.

These payments will increase by approximately 1-2 percent per year as the assessed value of your property increases.

You decide: yes or no? Get out and vote on May 2. Every vote counts.

The spending numbers above are from H-PT Schools Project Cost Detail documents available on the H-PT Schools’ website.

Construction contingencies, architectural fees and construction management fees are proportionally allocated to the two categories.

The costs to homeowners are from the Houghton Portage Township Schools 2017 Bond Proposal flyer.
