Transgender Day of Remembrance

To the editor:

I attended the Transgender Day of Remembrance Vigil on November 20th in Houghton. We gathered in candlelight and read the names of the 22 Transgender and Gender Non-conforming people who were murdered in anti-transgender violence in the United States so far this year. Similar observances have occurred annually throughout the U.S. for the last 20 years.

It was profoundly moving to hear each name read along with their date and cause of death. Together we held the memory of each victim with care as we mourned their tragic deaths by violence and lifted up their lives. I am grateful that I had the opportunity to attend this vigil in the Keweenaw and thank the Keweenaw Unitarian Universalist Fellowship for organizing and providing space for this observance.
