Christmas carol memories
To the editor:
The recent Gazette survey regarding three Christmas songs reminded me that my favorite is “The Christmas Song.” It also reminded me of a snowy December eve when my husband called me into the living room, after hearing noise outside, and pointed at the windows.
With apologies to Clement Parke Moore and his A Visit from St. Nicholas, I “tore open the shutters and threw up the sash” or rather literally pulled open the curtains and wound out the window. What to our “wondering eyes did appear” were about 25 warmly dressed Christmas carolers merrily singing, “It Came Upon a Midnight Clear.” With their long mufflers, they looked like a picture out of Dickens’ Christmas Carol. We heartily applauded them before they continued on their way to sing more Christmas carols in the snowy air.
