Stop sports scholarships
To the editor:
Mr. Thornton defined the problem. The solution: cease the awarding of athletic scholarships. Cease esteeming the athletes more than the scholar, cease paying coaches more than Nobel laureates. Let colleges and universities fulfill the mission they were created to perform-teach and research. Those students that wish to participate in sports can organize clubs intramural or other associations.
At present the colleges and universities are a subsidized minor league for MLB, NFL, NBA, and NHL. They are not programs for amateur athletes.
