To the editor:

Our hardworking junior senator is under attack by misleading ads funded by Mitch McConnell’s warchest. Don’t believe them. Gary Peters gets things done. The Detroit Free Press calls Peters “one of the more productive and bipartisan senators in a Senate riven by partisanship” (24 Sept 2020). In 2019, he was among only 16 Senators with a 100% record on floor votes.

I am voting for Gary Peters because, like Joe Biden, he is the best candidate to get our government working again. He advocates adding a public option to the Affordable Care Act, which has been highly popular and successful, rather than insisting on single payer health care, and though he finds the Green New Deal exciting, he wants to work toward it through more gradual steps like reducing carbon emissions.

Though I personally prefer more progressive measures, I believe that right now it is more important to end government gridlock and inaction on the many serious issues facing our country: racial injustice; a stimulus for people and an economy devastated by the coronavirus; fires, hurricanes, and floods exacerbated by climate change; and millions of people losing their health insurance. If McConnell and his minions retain control of the Senate, we will continue to experience governmental stalemate and inaction. We cannot endure two or four or six more years of this.

Gary Peters will work in a bipartisan way with other senators to begin to address these problems that so profoundly rip our country and society apart. Vote for Gary Peters.
