Manifesto is a disgrace

To the editor:

This is in regard to the recent letter sent by Baraga County officials to the State of Michigan–the infamous “enough is enough” letter. They are right that enough is enough. Enough sedition from our local elected officials is enough.

I am sick and tired of the poor me white grievance attitude found in the Baraga County officials’ letter. There is nothing more disgusting, pitiful, and pathetic than white people feeling sorry for themselves. It’s always about my freedoms and my rights and never about the rights and freedoms of other people or the responsibilities we all share as citizens. Our local officials never gave their support to measures meant to slow the pandemic in the first place, so what’s the complaint? Never mind that the “enough is enough” letter is rife with lies. Never mind that our officials’ grasp of history is marginal and their attitude toward science shocking. And never mind that none of us can enjoy freedom if we are dead. Until our BC officials have something intelligent to say, I suggest they just shut the heck up.

People, it’s a pandemic. Our Baraga County officials are just encouraging stupid behavior. People have had to endure worse hardships throughout all of history and have done so in dogged fashion, but we can’t even be bothered to wear masks. No, our freedom and vanity are at stake. Our proud heritage and legendary toughness has devolved into whining and complaining and conspiracy theories. Now it seems we are only tough when armed to the teeth in an intimidating mob.

On a personal note, the next time my fever spikes above 103 degrees and I have other symptoms I do not wish to mention here, I will make sure to see my local sheriff or county clerk or, perhaps, a commissioner. They know more than doctors, and I’m sure they can take care of it. But for now I am deeply grateful for the timely, excellent medical care I received at our local hospital in October, care that may have saved my life, the one that means so little to our Baraga County officials.
