Thank you from Toys for Tots

To the editor:

This was the twenty-second year that The Keweenaw Detachment of the Marine Corps League has conducted a Toys for Tots Campaign in the Copper Country. In spite of the obstacles created by the Coronavirus, outstanding community support enabled us to provide nearly 3,900 toys to 1285 children in the Copper Country. In addition to the hundreds of individuals who dropped off toys in our donation boxes throughout the community, the following organizations were major supporters of this year’s campaign: Keweenaw Bay Indian Community and The Ojibwa Casino, Houghton High School Student Council, Portage Health Systems, Van Pelt and Opie Library, College of Forest Resources and Environmental Science, and the Keweenaw Research Center at MTU, U-Haul Self Storage, Gloria Dei Church, KC Bonkers, OHM Advisors and Family Dollar in Hancock, Dollar General in Ontonagon and Bruce Crossing, Houghton County Bar Association, Walmart, Walgreen Drugs, The Critter Ranch, Auto Value in Calumet and Houghton, Snyder Drugs, The Calumet Art Center, Joey’s Seafood and Grill.

The Michigan Department of Human Services in Houghton and Baraga were major cooperators who helped with the distribution of toys in Houghton and Baraga Counties. Ontonagon County Outreach Programs in Geenland, Rockland, Bruce Crossing, Ewen, White Pine and Ontonagon assisted with toy distribution in Ontonagon County. We were one of 811 Toys for Tots campaigns throughout the country this year. Toys for Tots annually distributes approximately seventeen million toys to over seven million children.
