Bergman on infrastructure

To the editor:

Rep. Jack Bergman is touting a recent speech in the U.S. House of Representatives in which he describes tax increases proposed by the Biden administration as “a radical tax agenda” which is “irresponsible” and “dangerous.”

The tax increases were proposed as a way to pay for infrastructure improvements in legislation that is being considered. What Bergman isn’t saying is that he is either against the proposed infrastructure improvements or he would rather borrow the money, increasing the national debt.

If Bergman is against infrastructure improvements he should say so and explain why roads and bridges, water lines, electric grids, etc. don’t need maintenance. Most of us depend on these systems and believe that reliable electric power, good roads and safe bridges are good for all of us. Clearly his reasons for disagreeing with that view would be worth hearing.

If, on the other hand, Bergman supports infrastructure improvements but thinks that the proposed method of paying for it is questionable, perhaps he could suggest a better way to secure funding. The alternative is that we borrow the money and leave it to our grandchildren to pay those bills. I, for one, believe in paying my own bills.

The GOP, of which Bergman claims to be a member, has traditionally supported democratic principles and fiscal responsibility. Bergman voted against certifying a duly elected President and is now becoming fiscally questionable. Perhaps we should be asking him what party he represents and who the party leader that directs his actions is.

Bergman works for us. Tell him that we need infrastructure improvements and we want them paid for.
