Free and open elections

To the editor:

Election fraud isn’t the issue with Donald Trump and his supporters. Election loss is the issue.

If Donald Trump had won the election, there would be no protest. Nevermind that the same election procedures would have been in place. If Donald Trump had won, no Trump supporter would have complained.

In 2016, Hillary Clinton was the winner of the popular vote (by nearly three million votes). Donald Trump was a minority candidate. More people voted against him than for him.

That didn’t stop Republicans from declaring that they had an overwhelming mandate to implement their agenda. They didn’t. There was no mandate. Instead, there was a country almost evenly divided.

Having lost the 2020 election, the Republican response is to find ways to keep Democratic voters from the polls.

Our politicians — all of them — need to embrace principles and find common ground that will unite a majority of our country before our country ceases to exist as a democratic republic. We voters need to hold them responsible to do that. In the end, our politicians will do what they think we want them to do. Right now they don’t have a very high opinion of our opinion.

Do you really want them to suppress the votes of those who disagree with you? If not, tell them.

Tell them you support free and open elections.
