To the editor:

The August ballot contains the county proposal “Tax Limitation Proposition for Operation of The Canal View – Houghton County.” This is to replace the expiring current millage to support the formerly named Houghton County Medical Care Facility. The Board of Directors of the League of Women Voters of the Copper Country supports this proposal and encourages you to vote yes on the Aug. 3 ballot. No reason absentee ballots are available now.

The language is confusing, but the Houghton County Commissioners and the Canal View Administrator have confirmed that “The millage proposal is for a reduced millage to 2.25 for four years. The previous millage was 2.5531 for six years. This is NOT 2.55 plus an increase of 2.25.” There is more information on the Millage – FAQ page at the website (houghtonmcf.com) The facility is an essential resource to the people of Houghton County and must receive our continued support.
