Why is the truth so hard?

To the editor:

“Why is the truth so hard?” Capitol police officer Dunn asked, during the hearing on the January 6th insurrection. In a very emotional, gut-wrenching hearing, four police officers, who had been defending the Capitol that day, told about their physical and psychological trauma. Anyone listening and seeing the videos had to be horrified.

It was powerful testimony.

The officers dispelled the Republican talking points that these were Antifa dressed up like Magats, or these were “tourists,” peaceful protesters, or that there was love, lots of hugging and kissing. Nonsense!

These were Trump supporters, incited by him, told lies for weeks, brainwashed into thinking they were “patriots,” saving the country. They were determined to overturn a free and fair election, and maybe kill a few congresspersons and a vice president while they were at it.

How on earth did we come to this? What is wrong with people?

The Republicans that buy into this garbage are looking more and more foolish. They know better. Kevin McCarthy is busy looking for a scapegoat. The Gaetz and Greene clown show at the Justice Department had to be shut down, shouted down by protesters.

On Faux News, Laura Ingraham and Tucker Carlson mocked the police officers and their pain. Shame on all of them.

I hope that the Republicans who still promote the Big Lie will soon come to realize that they’ve hitched their wagons to the wrong star. A big, lying, despicable orange star.

And before you start the old “what about” nonsense, remember that no one condones violence, vandalism, or crimes against police. But January 6th was an attempted coup, an attempt to overthrow our government, an attempt to stop the peaceful transfer of power, that is so important to our democracy. That it was unsuccessful is a blessing, but lies and downplaying the seriousness of this attempt is dangerous.
