Climate numbers matter

To the editor:

At the International Climate Conference in Scotland, scientists grappled with troubling numbers. The human species is ejecting 50 billion tons of greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere a year primarily by burning coal, oil, and gas. So far, these heat trapping gasses have locked in enough heat to warm a whole planet 1.1C/2.0F. The energy being trapped is equivalent to four Hiroshima atomic bombs exploding every second.

The consequence is the world’s climate is deteriorating. Scientists agree if we do not switch to plentiful non-polluting sources of energy from the sun and wind the earth will heat further. If we pass the 1.5C/2.7F goal life will be, at best, challenging for our children. If we pass the 2.0C/3.6F threshold all climate hell will break loose.

What can we do? Let me toss out a couple more numbers. The climate science consensus is over 99%. Cornell University recently examined 88,000 peer reviewed papers from reputable science journals from 2012 through 2020. They confirmed the consensus is even stronger than the previous measured consensus of 97%. Did you know this?

If you did, you are in the minority. A Pew Research Poll found only 27% of American Citizens knew this. By repeating the 99% consensus fact in everyday conversation, we can make a difference. Knowing the consensus is empowering. 99% is as close to an airtight unity as humanly possible.

With these numbers you can speak with authority. Our kids will suffer if we do not FORCE our representatives to act now. Being proactive is simple. Just write or call them. Tell your representative you will not vote for them if they do not enact policy transitioning to clean power. Let them know you will support them if they have the courage to enact morally and scientifically grounded policy.

Most of the technology to make the transition to clean power is on the shelf ready to be deployed. More breakthroughs are on the edge of being perfected.

Carbon sequestration technologies, both natural and artificial, are also being perfected.

The science community is in 99% consensus and optimistic we can prevail. It is time to speak up.

If we demand climate action from our representatives, we will solve humanity’s biggest threat.

Speak for and vote for leaders who have the courage to get something done. Are you listening Jack Bergman?
