To the editor:
I’ve been trying to figure out why some people are so fervent in their continuing support for former President Donald Trump. I’m no great fan of either political party. My opinion is that both parties have become completely subservient to their corporate and Wall Street overlords. As of 2019, the top 10% of households in the US held 70% of the country’s wealth, while the bottom 50% held just 2%.
In 2020, Georgia congressperson Jon Ossoff raised 150 million dollars to get a job that pays $174,000. Where did all money come from and what were the anticipated “paybacks”? Thanks to the Supreme Court, also bought and paid for by the rich and their congressional manipulators, we’ll never know.
So, I completely understand why folks might be disillusioned by politicians, in general. But I can’t understand why anyone would prefer Trump over just about almost anyone else. Some of his fan base is clearly composed of people who have become completely detached from any viable sense of reality. I’m afraid the woman who says spoons will stick to your head if you get vaccinated, that spoon attraction is not her most immediate life-challenge. As for cannibalistic baby factories in the basement of pizza shops…well, enough said.
I wonder about the remainder of Trump supporters who are capable of taking on faith that the Earth is spherical, that doctors know some useful stuff, and that it’s generally not a good idea to drink bleach or take horse dewormer to get back at Dr. Fauci. Why do they support Trump?
I think some Trumpers figure it takes a crook to reckon with crooks. Some might believe that if you pander to pirates, you might pick up some bits of spilled treasure. Others are so disenchanted with their life situations that they figure we might as well let it all far apart.
A few might actually believe that an entitled grifter, son of a slum landlord, thrice married, feels their pain and has their best interests at heart. This brave man, who stirred up his faithful saying, “And after this, we’re going to walk down (to the capitol) and I’ll be there with you.” But he wasn’t there with them and still isn’t. Golden toilet boy was gleefully watching his followers create chaos on TV. He and his rich buddies are laughing all the way to the bank; laughing at you.
