No seaplanes in Portage Township

To the editor:

After reading the front page article regarding the proposed seaplane airport and operation on Portage Lake, just south of Houghton, we want to say, “Just say no to a seaplane airport next to residential neighborhoods on Portage Lake!”

What homeowner, boater, or kayaker wants noisy seaplanes landing and taking off on the peaceful waters of Portage Lake at all times of the day? What outdoor enthusiasts want to see the wildlife around Pilgrim Point/old Onigaming property disappear? Who wants the active eagle’s nest on the property to be destroyed? Who wants the beautiful DNR trail to be interrupted with a seaplane business, traffic and related airport?

And, who wants to simply drive down 41, right before the entrance to Michigan Tech and the City of Houghton, and see airplane hangars, parking lots, and fueling tanks?

Why would we preference a business owner over the residents who would be forced to live next to an airport? It defies logic to relocate Isle Royale Seaplane base next to the Nara Nature Park with two residential zoned neighborhoods situated directly adjacent to the proposed seaplane base.

We implore anyone who does not want to disturb the beautiful land and scenery as you enter the serene area of the Keweenaw Peninsula to please let your opinions be known. Make your voice heard with an email or letter to Portage Township expressing your concern. (supervisor@charterportagetwp.org) Relocating Isle Royale Seaplane base was not right for the City of Houghton and it’s not right for Portage Township!
