Response to several STR letters

To the editor:

On March 9, the Gazette published three Letters to the Editor dealing with a proposal to regulate Short-term rentals in Eagle Harbor Township. Challenging as it is to address three letters within the Gazette’s 400-word limit, that the letters have much in common, including writing style, may make it possible.

Joe Loehnis, Madison, surprised several retired friends (nurse, teacher, clerk) with his term “wealthy retirees.” He said his family loves visiting the Keweenaw and their visits as tourists drive a sustainable economy. Short-term rentals, he states, are the kind of places they choose to ease expense. No description of the impact on seven established motels and cabins — those that have health department inspections and business taxes. Are they not part of the economy?

David Moss, part-time resident of Lake Medora, Eagle Harbor Township, seems to fit into his own words — “wealthy retiree(s) who summer…for three to four months before returning to their permanent residence…By impeding short-term-rentals,…this ordinance will raise the tax burden for the rest of us.” Does Dr. Moss take into account the tremendous amount of volunteer efforts contributed by long-term residents of Eagle Harbor? We have not met but I would love to see him as a volunteer involved in such efforts as Pine Grove Cemetery or beach clean-up, setting out markers and maintaining the raft in the Harbor, promoting the Keweenaw County Sheriff’s Toy Drive, donating to Eagle Harbor’s gifts for parents of those kids or even grooming ski trails. He might consider being part of the volunteer fire department or volunteering for the various committees that help the Township run. With medical background, he might contribute to the work of First Responders.

Tom Forsell, Lake Medora (Mohawk ZIP), charges that the not-yet-adopted ordinance was the product of stealth. What? Notices of all committees are posted at the EH Township Hall. Minutes are posted on the website. He questions the composition of Planning Commission since two are owners of STRs. As a registered voter (although not a year-round resident) and also an STR owner, why would he not attend meetings and provide input?

A year-round resident of EH Township for 26 years, I applaud the Township Board’s leadership. Eagle Harbor contributes much to enhance our area. Regular office hours, Protection of Brockway Mountain and Community Recycling are examples. Dedicated officials, businesses, and volunteers contribute more to our communities than protectors of their own income from short-term rentals.

Starting at $3.50/week.
