A ‘thank you’ to all who helped during a recent medical emergency
To the Editor:
What happens in a Middle School Cafeteria definitely doesn’t stay in a middle school. Today I experienced a medical emergency… during lunch hour… in the middle of the cafeteria. I can tell you, this is a very effective way to quiet down a large group of students. I am sharing my story because of my gratitude and appreciation for Hancock Middle School. Immediately at my side was one teacher, Kristan Coleman who literally saved me from potential trauma, right behind her to assist was one of my ParaProfessionals, Carsen Chynoweth, who did not hesitate to come and help. What happened over the next several minutes is a blur for me, but before I knew it, there were several teachers by my side (thanks to the quick gossip train of curious middle schoolers). There was a first responder, more paraprofessionals, my principal Hannah Impola and the Superintendent, Dr. Patchin. If I wasn’t so pale, guys, I would have been blushing. The support system that ran to my side really shocked me.
You see, I’m not from the area, and I’m not a normal teacher at the school. I started working for Hancock Middle School as a substitute teacher in September. I was blessed to then become a long term substitute. I have known these people for 3 months. In that time I have gained amazing friends and cohorts. I feel more than welcomed in this school, and am hopeful to continue my teaching career within these walls. Today I inconvenienced my school and cohorts, but no one thought twice about it. My afternoon was covered and while I was “chillin’ in my ER room” I received several supportive texts as well as word that I can take the time I needed to heal and come back when I was ready. Fortunately for me I am feeling tip top and plan to be back in my class tomorrow.
In closing; to all of the students in the cafeteria, I am sorry if I frightened you but utterly appreciate your respect and well wishes. To my fellow teachers and paraprofessionals, I am beyond lucky to have been able to join this new family and thank you for your support and care. And last but definitely not least to my Principal and Superintendent, you have helped to foster a community at our school. This community came together without hesitation and that’s a testament to both of you. Thank you for welcoming me and continuing to provide your unwavering support.
Go Bull Dogs!
With Love and Gratitude,
Danielle Thoune
