Calumet Village election

To the editor:

On May 3 there is a special election in the Village of Calumet, and there is only one question on the ballot. The language on the petition that was circulated read, “Shall ordinance No. 158 which eliminates the election of the village treasurer and provides for appointment of the village treasurer by the council be approved?

The village attorney revised the language. Here is the question that will appear on the ballot: Shall Ordinance Number 158 of the Village of Calumet providing that the village treasurer shall be chosen by a nomination by the village president and appointment by a majority vote of the village council be approved as authorized by Section 1(3), Chapter II of the General Law Village Act (1895, PA 3, as amended)?

Yowser! All that legalesse doesn’t mention that if the voters vote yes, they will no longer be able to elect the treasurer and that an appointed person doesn’t even have to live in the village. Never again will the taxpayers and residents of the village be able to pick the person they want if the vote passes.

Please vote NO on May 3, 2022! It’s your right to want the people who run the town to live in it; your right to choose the people who represent you and be able to vote them out of office if they are not doing a good job, and your right to continue to have your voice heard in the town in which you live.
