Pep Band apologizes

In response to “An open letter to the MTU Pep Band,” published Feb. 15, the Huskies Pep Band would like to apologize for the chant that originated in our section at the Friday night Winter Carnival hockey game against BGSU.

What began as an uncouth expression of frustration between a few members quickly spread within our organization and the rest of the student section.

We are sorry for how far off course our actions were, and it is regrettable we did not realize it sooner. We recognize that our position as a highly visible student organization means we should hold ourselves to a higher standard.

Going forward our leadership is actively discussing ways to prevent any similar behavior. The Huskies Pep Band exists to bring joy to the players and spectators at the events we attend, and our actions at that game did not meet those goals.

We stand to make our organization a fun face that is known for jeers and taunts towards opponents with a cute smile, and we are sorry that in that moment, we did the opposite of that. We are always trying to be better, and looking forward we will continue to do so.

We hope that the Tech alumni and students as well as other members of our community who were rightfully disappointed are able to look past this poor decision and move forward with us.

We would like to continue to have our support of our teams be our defining characteristic, rather than unsportsmanlike behavior on a bad day.
