Kern for Keweenaw County Commission
I am AJ Kern and a candidate for Keweenaw County Commissioner, District 1.
In July, the county board approved a half-mill property tax increase to fund a full-time zoning administrator. Allouez Township supervisor noted that voters would likely oppose the property tax increase.
Voters may also feel blindsided, as the county previously funded a full-time ZA. Why is there an inadequate budget now?
I also disagree with the board’s raising property taxes when failing to explore alternative revenue streams.
Local governments primarily depend on property taxes, which remain static even as the demand for services rises proportionally with the increasing number of tourists. Additionally, lands designated as preserves or trusts also contribute minimal property tax revenue.
Unlike other municipalities, Keweenaw County issues short-term rental permits at no cost with no annual licensing fee. Despite turning properties into businesses that generate an estimated $40,000 to $90,000+ annually, STR owners do not contribute to the tax base beyond what any other comparable property owner pays.
I recommend STR conditional use permit fees and annual licenses establishing a stable revenue stream that allows the cost to be directly borne by STR customers driving demand for additional services, rather than permanent resident property taxes.
As the community grapples with complex issues, it’s imperative for all stakeholders to engage in constructive dialogue working toward solutions benefiting the county as a whole. Transparency, accountability, and effective communication are key in shaping the future of Keweenaw County.
I also believe it’s time for Keweenaw County to come into the 21st century–starting by posting county board meeting agenda’s online, rather than simply posting on the courthouse door.
I have a political science degree, emphasizing public administration, a master’s degree in land use planning, and experience as a county planner and zoning specialist for a publicly traded telecommunications company.
I currently serve on the county Planning Commission and ZBA.
As a U.S. Army Reserve veteran, intelligence analyst trained at Fort Huachuca, Arizona, I developed analytical skills with an attention to details and an understanding of complex issues.
If you live in Keweenaw County’s first district, I respectfully ask for your vote this November. My stance on zoning and countywide issues stem from concerns about the county’s current trajectory. By challenging decisions lacking transparency and accountability, I’m advocating for greater clarity and adherence to established protocols reflecting commitment to good governance and fostering community trust.
