To the editor:
Recently, the Mining Gazette reported upon the theft of around 900 American flags taken from Michigan Tech’s campus, and thrown in the dumpsters. These flags were part of a beautiful and grand display set up through hard work and honorable efforts by the Young Americans for Freedom group as a memorial to those who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001.
Besmirching and vandalizing this remembrance goes beyond a prank (if such if was). It disrespects our country, our U.S. .flag, those who died on that date, kicks dirt at their loved ones left behind. This crime (call it what it is) demeans our community, as well as the wonderful and thoughtful work the YAF did. The perpetrators would likely cry bloody murder if such a heinous crime were committed against them. The Gazette described this act as “Disgraceful,” and I can find no more appropriate word.
Some actions I might suggest in the case of this apparently targeted act, should those responsible be found, might be for the perpetrators to face legal penalties such as charges of vandalism and theft. Further, if a group such as a fraternity is found responsible, disbarment and decertification of their organization for a year might be appropriate, along with the individuals’ expulsion from Michigan Tech University.
We all have a responsibility to the community, and those who instigated this major slight of civic duty and decency should be ashamed.
Perhaps this was some for of disrespectful and misguided anti-National protest? I, for one, salute our great U.S. flag. I only hope their hearts lead them to come forward, publicly apologize, and admit their deed.
