Go vegan

Editor:

As International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste (September 29) approaches, let’s remember that going vegan is one of the most powerful ways to fight food waste. Animal agriculture is among the most inefficient industries on Earth–grains and vegetables that could feed humans are funneled into raising billions of cows, pigs, chickens, and other animals, who are raised and slaughtered for food.

Every animal is someone. Cows form long-term friendships, and mother hens gently chirp to their chicks before they even hatch. These social, sensitive beings don’t want to be exploited for their flesh, milk, or eggs. Yet their lives–and vast amounts of resources–are wasted in the process.

Even though animal agriculture provides just 18% of our calories and 37% of our protein, it devours 83% of farmland and pumps out 60% of agriculture-related greenhouse gas emissions. By contrast, by eliminating animal-derived ingredients, we could free up 75% of global farmland and help feed a growing global population more sustainably.

Going vegan is a simple, effective way to use crops wisely, reduce the staggering footprint of animal agriculture, and save countless lives. Pair that with small, sustainable steps in your own kitchen, and you’ll cut food waste, save money, and help build a compassionate future for all beings. Check out PETA.org for more information.
